Arrive by 07:00 for registration, a ranger briefing and assignment to a habituated gorilla family.

Guided walk through bamboo and montane forest; trekking time ranges from 40 minutes to 4 hours.

A supervised hour observing the family at a respectful distance.

About this experience
Volcanoes National Park is one of a handful of places on earth where you can walk into the forest and meet wild mountain gorillas. After an early briefing at Kinigi park headquarters, rangers assign your group to a gorilla family matched to your fitness level, then guide you through farmland, bamboo and montane forest until the trackers radio through their position. The hour you spend with the family is strictly limited and closely supervised.

Important information
Know before you go
- Minimum age is 15 years, set by park regulations and strictly enforced
- Moderate to strenuous fitness is recommended; terrain is steep, muddy and at altitude
- Waterproof jacket, long trousers and sturdy boots are essential year round
