What to Expect on the Bisoke Hike
The Bisoke hike is approximately a 6-hour round-trip trek, with an elevation gain of around 1,500 meters. Here’s what you’ll experience:
- Trail Description: The trail starts from the Volcanoes National Park headquarters and takes you through dense forests and bamboo groves. As you ascend, the path becomes steeper and more challenging, but the incredible views make every step worthwhile.
- Summit Views: The highlight of the hike is the stunning crater lake at the summit, a serene and picturesque reward for your efforts. At the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and even Rwanda’s twin lakes, Lake Ruhondo and Lake Burera.
- Wildlife and Flora: Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of plant species and possibly spot golden monkeys, buffalo, and an array of birdlife, including the endangered Rwenzori turaco.

04:30 AM: Pick-Up and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
- Your adventure begins early in the morning. A professional tour guide will pick you up from your accommodation and drive you to Volcanoes National Park in the Musanze District.
- Enjoy the scenic journey through rural Rwanda as you travel towards the park headquarters at Kinigi.
07:30 AM: Arrival at Kinigi Headquarters
- Upon arrival at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi, you will meet other hikers who are embarking on the Bisoke hike.
- A briefing is conducted by the park ranger guide, explaining the rules of the hike, safety protocols, and the wildlife you may encounter along the way.
- The rangers, who are highly experienced and knowledgeable about the park, will provide insights into the area’s natural and cultural history. Many of the rangers are locals from the Kinigi region and have been working in the park for many years, offering an authentic connection to the landscape.
08:00 AM: Transfer to Bisoke Volcano Hike Start Point
After the briefing, you’ll board the vehicle for a 40-minute transfer to the Bisoke Volcano hiking start point.
- The first 15 minutes of the journey are on a paved road, while the remaining part is a bumpy ride over volcanic rocks, adding to the sense of adventure.
- On arrival at the trailhead, the hike begins.
09:00 AM: Start the Hike – Bisoke Head Trail (2700 meters above sea level)
- The trail starts at 2,700 meters above sea level, and the ascent will take around 4 hours to reach the summit.
- Porters are available to assist you, carrying your bag and providing help through challenging spots such as muddy patches, steep sections, and slippery terrain.
- The first 20 minutes of the hike pass through rural villages and farmland along the edge of the park. After that, you will cross a stone wall and enter the heart of Volcanoes National Park, where the trail becomes more rugged.
Wildlife Encounters:
- While hiking, you may get a rare chance to spot some of the park’s wildlife, such as gorillas, golden monkeys, forest elephants, and buffaloes. Although sightings of forest elephants and buffaloes are rare, the chances of encountering golden monkeys are higher.
- If you happen to see gorillas, you can observe them for a short while; however, please note that this hike does not include a Gorilla trekking permit, so photography of gorillas is not allowed.
Reaching the Summit – Crater Lake
- After approximately 4 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the summit of Bisoke, where you’ll be greeted by the stunning Crater Lake. The lake sits in a volcanic crater, surrounded by drier vegetation and giant heather plants. This serene location offers breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanic peaks and the two Twin Lakes below.
- The landscape here is unique and vastly different from the dense forests lower down. Spend time at the summit, take in the views, and capture the scenery with photos.
1:00 PM: Picnic Lunch at the Summit
- At the summit, enjoy a well-deserved break with a picnic lunch. The location provides incredible views of the surrounding Volcanoes National Park and the five other volcanoes in the area.
- Depending on the weather, you’ll have time to rest, take photos, and savor the peaceful surroundings.
2:00 PM: Start the Descent
- After your picnic and exploration, you will begin the descent back to the trailhead. The journey down takes approximately 2 hours, depending on your pace and the number of breaks taken.
- Your rangers and porters will assist you during the descent, which is often easier than the ascent but still requires careful attention to avoid slipping in certain areas.
4:00 PM: Return to Hotel
- After completing the descent, your tour guide will meet you and transfer you back to your hotel or residence.
- Reflect on the incredible hike you’ve just completed and the memories made during your time in the Volcanoes National Park.
